One I Am

I can’t believe that my daughter will be 3 in May. Three going on 15. This one keeps me young 🙂

And I can’t believe that it’s been almost 2 years since her Dr. Seuss birthday party and I have yet to share the details. I wanted to share details of her birthday party so that I could finally give credit to the amazing bloggers that gave me so much inspiration.

Since we owned practically all of the Dr. Seuss books, it was a more than appropriate party theme.

First, the decor. I stuck to teal, red, yellow, and white, which helped me get some basic decorations from Party City. I used white vases that I already had and jazzed them up with ribbon thanks to this inspiration and some twirly vase fillers and boas that I found at the craft store. And the morning of, I sent my Dad out for cheap, simple bouquets to fill the vases.

As guests entered, they were greeted by hanging Dr. Seuss quotes, thanks to Annie’s Eats and her awesome idea here.

Every single food item was Seuss related.

Deviled eggs as “Green Eggs No Ham” and pasta salad as “Oodles of Noodles”. With inspiration from the Sweet Designs by Amy Atlas blog  here, I got the idea to put fruit on sticks as “Truffula Fruits”. And I found the great idea for “Cat Hats” here at Anders Ruff.

I ran out of time to make a full-blown cake, so I made Thing 1 and Thing 2 cupcakes thanks to the help of some homemade cupcake liners and very high frosting. And the green jello? It’s “Oobleck”!

The Girl Who Ate Everything has a great tutorial for “Green Eggs and Ham” here.

“Star Belly Sneetches” thanks to Pizzazzerie’s post here.

And rolled wrap sandwiches as “Truffula Trees”.

The Hip Hip Hooray Blog had a wonderful idea for a personalized banner here that really helped liven up the present table.

And thanks to the wonderfully talented Kristy Makes, I got a fantastic guest book idea here that Jude will cherish for years.

Waiting for the guests when they left were individually wrapped sugar cookies with a sweet note inspired by Giggles Galore.

And the birthday girl got her very own Cat in the Hat smash cake 🙂

I think she had a good time 🙂

Howell Has The Best Melons!

It’s a fact. They even have a festival to prove it…

I love discovering local events. And it doesn’t hurt when they involve food or beverages 😉

Saturday night was spent with my husband in the beer tent. We had the chance to sample tasty local beer. B. Nektar Meadery of Ferndale, MI has a Vanilla Cinnamon Mead that is to die for! Bees usually scare me, but there’s nothing I don’t like about these bee-covered bottles.

And check out the neat beer guide they had:

Sunday was spent wandering through the Farmer’s Market with my sister. There were tons of fresh fruits and vegetables!

These guys were my favorite 🙂 It’s like Halloween came early!

Of course,we had to stop by Howell’s Main Street Winery for a wine & cheese snack!

I managed to snag a bottle of their famous Melon Wine as well. Be on the lookout for a melon recipe soon!

A lovely new apron!

I just LOVE aprons! My little nieces and nephew made me such a sweet apron (mommy helped, of course).

They even added the little pups 🙂 Look at that cupcake! How CUTE! It’s the perfect colors too!

Thanks again Keegan, Bailey, & Brady 🙂

My Sister’s Bridal Shower

I threw a bridal shower for my sister this weekend. I can’t believe her wedding is 2 weeks away already! The bridal shower went really well. I had a lot of work to get the house prepped (especially since we just moved in a week ago!) but I had some great helpers. Here’s a few shots from the shower:

It was a cocktail party and a “Stock The Bar” theme, so we had little wine and cocktail themed decorations here and there. I got some drink umbrellas with olives and martinis on them, some wine napkins, some wine and cheese pics, and even some wine-scented candles!

This is the beverage set-up:

For the favors, I made truffles with coconut, nuts, and cocoa powder. Then I boxed them up in these cute ring boxes that my mom found in Korea:

Truffles are fairly simple to make. You basically melt heavy whipping cream with butter and place it on top of broken chocolate pieces. Then you let it firm up in the fridge for a couple hours or overnight. It gets tricky when you have to roll the chocolate into balls, since the heat from your hands will melt the chocolate. Keeping a bowl with ice cubes and water near you can definitely help. Once you’ve rolled the chocolate into balls, then you just roll it in whatever topping you want!

Each guest got a truffle box and a travel size sanitizer from Bath and Body Works in their goodie bag:

I also ordered a small photo book online with photos of the happy couple. I bought some paint pens from Joann Fabrics and asked the guests to sign the book:

Here are some pictures of the set-up. I can’t take credit for the food, that was all my mom. She’s an amazing cook.

Here’s the tables full of yummy:

Here’s some crab and shrimp mini quiches:

And some ham quiche:

Overall, a great success!

My very talented big sister

I have to take a moment and brag about my sister…

A couple months ago she started making customized incense bottles. She paints all of them from scratch and so far is doing a fantastic job! This past weekend she made a bottle for my friend’s bridal shower and it turned out awesome:
