Under The Sea

A friend of mine is having a little boy in June. This past weekend we had a little baby shower for her at BD’s Mongolian BBQ. Since her nursery is based around an ocean theme, I decided to make an ocean theme cake for the shower.

I found the inspiration from Little Cottage Cupcakes’s Octonauts cake, one of the cutest cakes I’ve seen so far! I marbled the fondant and covered the base. I made the sea life out of colored fondant and let them dry before applying them to the cake and the base.

The cake is vanilla filled with vanilla pudding, covered with vanilla buttercream and fondant.

The baby turtle was sculpted out of fondant and placed on top after a dowel was inserted in the cake.

I can’t wait to meet baby Jameson!

  2. Your cake is _amazing_. I found your blog via MacGuffin and Puffin – I’ve only looked at a couple of your more recent posts. Do you happen to have any tutorial style posts? I would _love_ to learn how to make / work with fondant.

Thank you very much! I don’t have any fondant tutorials up right now, but I’ve been thinking of popping some tutorials up soon. Anything in particular you’d like to see?

      • I’m starting right from the beginning lol – I’ve been itching to take a class but I can’t really afford it atm. How about going over a couple of basic recipes and how to make it nice and smooth over the whole cake and how to make a simple flower?

        You are amazing 🙂

I can definitely keep that in mind. There are some newer flowers I need to test out too, so I can make that part of the tutorial.

      • OOOOH! Ditto! Me too! Ive always wanted to know how to do fondant stuff with cakes, but Ive never got time or $ for like, classes and stuff. Please teach us!

Well now that I know that people are interested, I can definitely do some tutorials! Just give me a few weeks though, I’m due in May so time may be limited shortly.

  3. How do you make the fondant go in curlicues like that?

Are you talking about the “seaweed”? I roll out my fondant, cut out different patterns, and then wrap the fondant around a lollipop stick and let it dry for about 15 minutes.

  5. Incredibly cute:)
