You may ask why…

I put a sheep on top of a surfboard, on top of a cake.

An old friend from high school is moving to Hawaii on Wednesday. He needed a change and jumped right at the chance to leave Michigan. I can’t say I blame him. Five years ago I up and decided to move to France. I had no children, no pets, and no husband. Don’t get me wrong; I love my life, but moving to Hawaii on a whim? Absolutely exciting! A year ago when I went to Hawaii for my friend’s wedding, I decided I wanted to stay and just frolic on the beach. I even had my other friend on board. It all ended shortly after my husband said “if you move here, I’m not sending you money”. Figures.

Anyway, back to the cake: I’m on a tangent. The reason there is a sheep surfing (sitting) on the cake is because of my friend’s website. He’s a wickedly talented graphic designer and his logo/mascot is a sheep:

Hawaii + Sheep? I figured why not put a sheep on a little fondant surfboard? I made the surfboard out of a mixture of fondant and gum paste so that it could harden overnight. When it was stiff, I painted the blue flower using color gel and a little bit of alcohol. I made the sheep out of fondant so that it wouldn’t harden as quickly. I let it dry overnight as well so that it would be easier to place on the cake. The cake is vanilla with a raspberry puree filling, with almond buttercream, covered in almond fondant.

I originally aimed to have the sheep actually surfing on top of the cake. The reason the sheep is sitting and not standing is because he unfortunately ended up a bit too hefty. My fondant animals all tend to be slightly wide. I’m still very happy with him though, he’s awfully cute!

Farewell Al! We’ll miss you and we wish you the best! Oh, and I’ll be there to visit very soon 😉
